Adjusting your sails

I have an amazing and fun collaboration with Megan King here at Yale.  Our first paper came out earlier this year and we have fun experiments ongoing to understand how the cell’s nucleus interacts with the cytoskeleton to regulate skin development and regeneration.  The month that our paper came out, we learned that our grant on this project was not going to be funded on the 2nd submission. While several of the reviewers LOVED it, one did not and when only 15% of grants are funded by NIAMS, that was enough to sink it at 20%.  This news threw me for a loop.

Resilience is all about being able to overcome the unexpected. Sustainability is about survival. The goal of resilience is to thrive.

These last few months I have dug deep and had amazing supporters come to my side.  We resubmitted the grant (to a different group of people) and I sent another grant on an exciting new avenue in my lab.  Several of my students and postdocs got fellowships and we got some other pilot grants.   And several of my colleagues have supported me.  One in particular reminded me at a meeting this summer that the science road is a marathon.  I am looking forward to the next mile!
